Monica Scholey

I grew up in Coos Bay, a small town on the southern Oregon coast. I moved away from the coast to go to the University of Oregon in Eugene, where studied Environmental Science and Biology. My first year in WSP was in Fort Bragg with the Redwood Sciences Lab working on the Caspar Creek watershed study, which monitors the cumulative effect of logging on the watershed. Now I’m living in Petrolia and working with the Mattole Restoration Council. I look forward to addressing upslope watershed issues with a community based approach. When I’m not volunteering for Americorps your most likely to find me eating good food, spending time outdoors hiking, surfing or camping, and exploring this incredible place that is northern California.

Jayme Seehafer

This is my second year as an AmeriCorps member at Redwood Sciences Lab in Arcata, which means that I must have really liked it the first year. I graduated Humboldt State University with a Bachelors degree in Ecology. I also picked up a couple of Associates degrees and a certificate in Natural Resources from a community college near Sacramento. I enjoy being crafty with my hands, watching obscure movies, and examining invertebrates under microscopes. I am currently looking for a “wife” to take care of the household chores and child rearing duties, but for now I have adapted to the role of Superwoman with grace. I grew up in and around Sacramento, tried to assert my independence just after high school in the Bay area, failed miserably, and ended up back in Sacramento with a new baby boy and an abundance of student loan debt. I first fell in love with the north coast coniferous forests as a small child when my family would vacation here and we saw purple salamanders in wet fern covered canyons. So when I had a second chance to escape the valley, I headed to Humboldt County where the toes are free and beards are long and I could find a community that I would be comfortable in. My son and I are very happy here now, and I intend to stay as long as the gods are appeased.

Arieh Scharnberg

Although he was born in Israel, Arieh Scharnberg grew up in the Redwoods between Arcata and Eureka, with a riparian corridor going through the middle of his property. These surroundings fostered an interest in the natural environment that carried over from childhood macro-invertebrate science projects to obtaining a degree in May of ’07 in Environmental Studies with an emphasis in Anthropology from Prescott College. During that time, and subsequently, Arieh has participated or worked in various forms of youth education, from teaching Hebrew language classes to working as a mountain guide in Switzerland, all with a variety of age groups. As a current employee through AmeriCorps’ Watershed Stewards Program (WSP) with the Yurok Tribe Environmental Program’s (YTEP) water division, Arieh will be involved in a variety of stream surveys, scientific reports as well as organizing community events and implementing the Real Science curriculum in local schools. The Real Science program provides education to students K-12 on “salmon lifecycles, watershed processes, and best land-use practices.” This 6 week program will be conducted locally at (insert names of schools here).

Scott Sinnot

"Scott Sinnott is another transplant from a far away and ambiguous place somewhere in the relative middle of the United States, and he likes to go by the name "Scott-face" for some weird reason. His unparalleled rock song sing-along repertoire and ability to do the twist really are... unparalleled. He is a bright-eyed, bushy-tailed young lad who is bound to go far in the field of his choice by always pursuing his dreams, never forgetting his manners, and using his sleepy puppy look to his advantage. His parents clearly enjoy alliteration in offspring-naming, which I admire from a purely literary standpoint. Scott enjoys long walks in the desert, Guns n' Roses, Slash, Axel, "Sweet Child of Mine", "Welcome to the Jungle", cake with yellow #2 frosting, wearing the color "merlot", and playing in wave-spittle (sea foam). Get to know him." - Authored by Natalie Arroyo, 2 year WSP team player/ alumnus and maker-upper of things.

Robyn Swan

Robynn was born in Oakland, CA and raised in the SF Bay Area and the San Joaquin Central Valley. At the age of 7, after watching a family adventure Disney Channel show called “Danger Bay” (about the adventures of a biologist and his kids who fight environmental crimes), Robynn knew she wanted to be a Marine Biologist. This determination never altered as she graduated from San Francisco State University with a B.S in Marine Biology. After working with harbor seals, sharks, bat rays, fish and other creatures of the San Francisco Bay, Robynn joined AmeriCorps WSP for some experience with Salmon and local watersheds. She hopes to use this experience to further help restore the wetlands and ecology of the SF Bay Estuary.
